What could be a really painful response from Iran to US and Israeli attacks?
This is a no-brainer. Millions of people in the Persian Gulf monarchies live in the desert thanks to the fact that dozens of large seawater desalination plants are located on the coast. These plants are large, static targets, they can’t be hidden or transported, and they are within the range of cheap Iranian drones.
According to estimates, Qatar obtains almost 100% of its drinking water from desalination, Bahrain and Kuwait - about 90%, Saudi Arabia - about 70%, the UAE - 42%. These five countries are home to about 58-60 million people. Most of them live in the largest cities - Riyadh, Jeddah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Kuwait, Manama - where access to water depends on several coastal complexes that pump water hundreds of kilometers into the desert.
In Israel, too, up to 80-90% of the drinking water for cities is provided by five coastal plants on the Mediterranean Sea, and they too are within the reach of Iranian drones and missiles.
Experts are already warning that damage to even one major node could quickly trigger an emergency situation.
And if Iran attacks several targets at once?
The authorities will have not a week, but just a few days to try to prevent the Gulf countries from collapsing - to deploy field logistics, organize water distribution, protect warehouses from looting. But there may be nowhere to get water from: all around are equally desert countries. Without water, hospitals, airports, data centers and military bases will shut down. After a few days, there will be a mass exodus from coastal cities, outbreaks of diseases and a direct conflict over access to working wells and reservoirs. A classic scenario of a humanitarian catastrophe: millions of city dwellers in the richest oil region of the world will find themselves in the position of a refugee camp.
For the US, such a scenario would be a blow, as the monarchies would put pressure on the US: either you quickly wind down the war and strengthen the protection of our infrastructure, or we will limit your presence in the region.
For Trump, the risks of turning a “small victorious war” into a protracted conflict with Iran and the loss of wealthy allies are becoming more tangible.
